Battle: Banana Flavored Milk! (Korean)

Near my work there is a Korean grocery store which I often walk to for a quick lunch.  As I was browsing the aisles, I noticed boxes of Banana Flavored Milk.  I love banana ice cream so I thought banana milk would be great.  It turns out banana flavored milk is a traditional drink that is popular in Korea.  There are many brands with the most popular brand being Binggrae.  I found three different brands at the store so I thought I’d do a battle of tasting for Banana Flavored Milk.

The three brands fighting it out today (From Left to Right)are: Binggrae, Seoul Milk (Enfant), and Yonsei.  Looking at the ingredient list without taste testing them, my guess is I will prefer the Binggrae, then the Seoul Milk, then the Yonsei.  Here are the Ingredients and nutritional information for each:

Binggrae Banana Flavored Milk

Ingredients: Milk, Water, Sugar, Skim Milk Powder, Whey Powder, Banana Juice Concentrate (0.32%)[Banana(100%)], Artificial Flavors, Mono- and Diglycerides of Fatty Acids, Carrageenan, Guar Gum, Annatto

The Binggrae milk pours out slightly thicker due to the added Carrageenan and Guar Gum.  The color is a pale cream yellow.  It has a smooth, slightly buttery flavor with a mild banana flavor.

Yonsei Banana Flavored Milk

Ingredients: Filtered Water, Whole milk powder, High fructose corn syrup, Sugar, Annatto, Mono an diglycerides of fatty acid, Banana flavor

This one also poured out smooth although not as thick as the Binggrae.  The color was darker and it tasted more like milk made from dried milk powder.  That milk powder aftertaste was unpleasant and overpowered any banana flavor that was present.

Seoul Banana Flavored Milk

Ingredients: Milk, Water, Skim Milk Powder, Sugar, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Banana Concentrate, Annatto Color, Banana Flavor (natural and artificial)

This milk was the most watery of the three and was more white in color.  It was sweeter and drinking this was more like drinking banana candy with that fake banana flavor.  I can’t decide which is more unpleasant – the fake banana flavor in this milk or the milk powder aftertaste in the Yonsei.

The winner of this Battle of Tastings is the Binggrae, hands down.
